Music

[edit]

What about other music "scenes" in this city? Rock, county, gospel..there are others. Why only mention hip-hop? Postoak 03:31, 3 February 2007 (UTC) I don't know. The Houston Hip Hop scene is the one I consistently read about in music and news publications. The New Yorker article cited compares it to Seattle in the early 90's. If there could be a general statement about Houston's music or live music scene, it would be more more appropriate in that article. Deatonjr 04:10, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help with the Houston, Texas by expanding the hip-hop paragraph you added to include other genre's? See the objection by KP Botany on the FAC page. Postoak 01:27, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think ZZTop should be mentioned? What about Houston Noise Bands? What do you think? Postoak 06:15, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Of all Houston artists, ZZ Top and Beyonce are the first that come to my mind. I think Houston Noise Bands could be integrated into the article, but not on the main Houston page. I'd save it for the culture article.

I'm glad you approve and have enjoyed. It would be good if you could watchlist it to check over new edits. You can find more of my contributions here. Tyrenius 05:45, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It should be watchlisted now that I've done a couple of edits. The references needed some work. I'm still not too good at properly formatting everything. Deatonjr 05:51, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Government and politics in Houston

[edit]

We should move some of Politics of Houston (maybe mayor and city council) back into the main article and reduce the crime paragraphs...or put the crime stuff in a subsection. Very little is sourced in Politics of Houston. What do you think? Postoak 21:44, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    • Yes, the crime statistics and specifically the Katrina related crime may be relevant to demographics, but not for the main article. It is more of a current event from over a year ago. Deatonjr 21:50, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's a reasonable mistake to misspell this guy's name, so I've redirected this title to the existing article. - Mgm|(talk) 10:31, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh thanks, good idea. I even did some google searches before creating the article and there are many pages that also misspell his name. Deatonjr 10:33, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If there's anything wrong with the ref formatting, it's probably the result of several editors having added them, so do correct if you see fit. I've just checked the article edit history. Thanks for conscientiously watching over it. I've had a look at some of your other contributions, including an interesting translation from a German featured article, and think it's time your work was recognised, so I'm awarding you a barnstar (alliteration accidental!). Tyrenius 04:46, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Added comment re Neaira to DYK. Some of the article is not quite fluent English, but very readable throughout nevertheless. Tyrenius 06:29, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Buchstabentafel

[edit]

de:Buchstabentafel

A tag has been placed on Ohmstede Limited, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group or service and which would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would help make it encyclopedic, as well as adding any citations from reliable sources to ensure that the article will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Sarc37 18:50, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quanell X

[edit]

I apologize for my confusion, I got reversed after seeing several items like this [1] and was trying to clear things up and I guess I missed one. When I saw the anon IP correcting [2], I hit the "undo" button after getting confused thinking they had re-added the ebonics-speak instead of catching a repair I had missed. It happens, I'm under a bit of stress studying. Thanks for correcting me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fixthepedia (talkcontribs) 21:37, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for understanding, I've been trying to do cleanup and get this up to date with the recent happenings but it's difficult when you get some of the random IPs coming in doing bad things. I saw an IP, saw some ebonics-speak in the difference, and my brain kicked in and said "it's the same guy coming back with ebonics again." It didn't occur that I might have accidentally reverted the ebonics along with a bunch of other things when I was trying to do cleanup. I'm still new to a lot of this wiki stuff and learning.

Would you maybe be able to give some help on the Johnny Sutton article as well? There's an editor there named Brimba who's not looking very carefully at things and was part of a group edit warring with another anon IP, and now the page is locked down completely to a very stripped down version. An outside perspective might get Brimba to stop and look more closely, he seems to be assuming this other IP is actually me and that's not the case. If nothing else you could help me find where more sources are needed or where mistakes are being made if you have the time please. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fixthepedia (talkcontribs) 21:47, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The videos are important because while Quanell is claiming there was pushing and shoving, the videos don't show any, and the news reports based only on Quanell's word aren't reliable then. I agree it'd be nice to keep the size of the Joe Horn part down, which is why I have been trying to watch and remove people who are just inserting their opinions when I can. I hope I got the sections set up right for the rest of the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fixthepedia (talkcontribs) 21:51, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you review my proposed changes to the Quanell X article? I believe as it stands it has a POV that is non-neutral, and has inflammatory unreliably sourced statements, particularly about his childhood. Xdeserted (talk) 06:10, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Thomas C. Lea, III

[edit]

Hi, in Thomas C. Lea, III, you said: "..."The Brave Bulls" and the "The Wonderful Country", are widely considered to be classics of southwestern American literature." Do you have a citation for that? Thanks. Best O Fortuna (talk) 07:31, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I worked on:
But, give me some more time, they are under construction, and I will be adding more, especially his article. Best O Fortuna (talk) 19:08, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More info > Patriarch: Pleasant John Graves Lea

[edit]

This family is kind of interesting:

I was doing a little surfing for information on Thomas Calloway Lea, Jr., and Sr., and came up with this:

Pleasant John Graves Lea, doctor, born 11/6/1808 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.

Listed in the Jackson County, Missouri 1850 census
Died 1862 in Jackson County, murdered by Union soldiers

Lived in Washington Township, Little Blue, Big Ceader; all Jackson County

NOTE: The Truman's, Anderson Shippe Truman and and his mothers side, Solomon Young, both settled between the Little Blue and Blue south of Independence to Grandview.

Lee's Summit, Missouri was named for Dr. Lea, but when they cast the culvert on the Missouri Pacific Railroad station side, they missed spelled the name, and the railroad started calling it "Lee's Summit"; also in sympathy with Robert E. Lee. [3]

Wife: 1) Lucinda Calloway 2) Fanny Clark Lucinda Callaway. (married 13 APR 1838); "Nancy Howard" was their grandmother-mother's side

  • Son: Alfred E. (allow "D" in on the above, I think in error?)
    • Grandson: Homer Lea (famous author; military adviser)
  • Son: Thomas Calloway S. Lea Sr. (Jackson County, MO commissioner, knew Harry S. Truman)
    • Grandson: Thomas Calloway Lea, Jr., (aka "Tom" prominent attorney, judge, and mayor of El Paso, TX; veteran Spanish-American and WWI).
      • Great-Grandson Thomas Calloway Lea, III (known as: Tom Lea; famous artist, painter, author, correspondent LIFE WWII; would paint a mural in the Pleasant Hill, MO post office, about Confederates turned out of their homes after the Civil War)
  • Son: Joseph Calloway Lea (1841-11-08 Cleveland, Tennessee, died 1904-02-04 Roswell, New Mexico.; "Captain Joseph C. Lea, From Confederate Guerrilla to New Mexico Patriarch" by Elvis E. Fleming. ISBN 9781881325536) Namesake for Lea County, New Mexico; founder of the New Mexico Military Academy (NMMI) at Roswell, NM. Created Chaves County, New Mexico.
  • Son: Frank H.

Enjoy, I am, fascinating family.

Best O Fortuna (talk) 02:03, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I had known about Tom Lea the author but got into editing those articles when I found out about his father. I was in El Paso and bought a book about the city's history titled "Ringside Seat to a Revolution", about El Paso in the late 19th and early 20th century. It mentioned Tom Lea Sr. several times as the mayor for a term and that got me thinking.... is he related to the author? Sure enough..... I was surprised to discover that these articles didn't exist on Wikipedia. There is a funny bit in the "Ringside Seat" that says Tom Sr. was a cross-dresser. I have yet to work it into the article. Great research, by the way. How do you do your research?Deatonjr (talk) 18:34, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the barnstar. You think if I keep working on the Lea family articles they will adopt me? His son, Jim (James) lives in Houston. I am going to start the J.C. one soon, that guy did a lot. I think I had heard about Tom Lea's artwork before, but kind of forgot. But, how I got on the trail this time: I was watching The FBI Story, with James Stewart (which is not that great of movie), and then I wanted to correct some of the fact from fiction in the article, and in researching, I found a movie review over at time.com, and the review was two reviews in one article, with the second one being The Wonderful Country. So, of course I had to learn more.
I can't find where Alfred dead? I have a very limited budget, so I don't have any of those good accounts where you can get the good stuff. I have to just try to pull things off the general Internet, which makes it a lot harder. I just use Yahoo! and Google, but I think it is the way that I search that makes the difference, without any good account this can be very time consuming. Also, when I look for one piece of information it leads me to another tidbit. When I find a new tidbit, I then back track, and try to find another source. I use TIME a lot, the free part of the New York Times is good (I wish I had a full account there, they have some good info, and it goes back to about 1850. And, even though I might only use one source, I find at least three before it goes in. So, if I find one piece of info, I look for confirmation at two other sites. I also have a good nose for sniffing out the crap, and lastly I think I have a decent feel for what is true and what is bullshit. Like when I searched for "Tom Lea" on Yahoo!, first site is www.tomlea.net, second is the UTEP site, but the third one is www.tomlea.com. This last site is a scam site. They have taken text from another site and just pasted it in, then when you surf there they hit you with pop-ups and adds. I went to the site and xxxporngirl popup came up. So, it is obvious some guy just rented a URL, then tries to suck you in for junk. These cheap copy+paste sites chap my butt. I also look for things that are wrong, if it smells funny, it most likely is. You can put something in an article here, say you put in that "Elvis had a special custom made toilet from American Standard". Then waited a month, you would find it repeated on a dozen sites, most without giving attribution and some not noting Wikipedia.
I am constantly surprised at how much source citing has changed with the internet. Most sources on wikipedia are just a link with a "last accessed" date. Many times it's just a title and publication, with no credit given to the author. A print article page reference is always preferable, if it exists, because the links for these online articles change, disappear, or require special access. This is true even for large publications like the New York Times, Houston Chronicle, etc. Deatonjr (talk) 14:45, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
PS: By finding three or more sites with confirmating (< made up word) information I am able to mentally sift them into one melded sentence or paragraph that is more accurate (and many times has more information than one of these individual sites alone). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Best O Fortuna (talkcontribs) 04:09, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My best research resource is the library. I was fortunate enough to live in Houston, TX, which has most of their reference databases online. So for free you can access tons of articles beyond what is normally available on the internet. Get a library card for your local city or county library, just to find out what databases they have available. Also most libraries will sell a membership for a modest annual fee if you are not a resident. The other option is to find a local university library. I follow the releases of university presses and the regional history section at the bookstore. The articles I wrote on Zenas Bliss and Edgar Odell Lovett were based on recently released biographies (and are still works in progress). I've also translated some articles from German. There are tons and tons of great articles on foreign language wikis that don't have english language articles. I like to run down the list of featured articles in German and find out which ones have no english equivalent. Finally, I follow ongoing stories in the local news. Quanell X and Joe Horn shooting controversy are two developing articles based on people in the Houston, TX area. Deatonjr (talk) 14:34, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
About the discouragement, I think that there is so much vandalism and crap on here that good editors react they way that guy did with me, just warning me without looking at exactly what I was doing. I wish it was a little (not much) harder to edit so that the good contributors could concentrate on making things better and not having to patrol for the garbage. Thanks again.
Tom Sr. was a cross-dresser? Or are you just talking about wearing the silk underwear? He wore silk underwear (they didn't make much mens back then) because he had a little health phobia, The Mayor's Silk Underwear He died with his silk undies on... " The Mex Files. So, it was more of a health thing after what his doctor told him (which was right by the way). But, if you have something more, we'll I had not heard about that.

Wikipedia Ambassador Program in Houston

[edit]

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you're listed as a Wikipedian from Houston. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors from the Houston area, to help with Wikipedia assignments at Texas Southern University. Classes at TSU will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester, and the role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

If you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone in Houston who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page. Thanks!--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:12, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Steve Bickerstaff for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Steve Bickerstaff is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Steve Bickerstaff until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Topjur02 (talk) 19:03, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Sarah Turner Butler has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of passing WP:GNG/NBIO. Claim (unreferenced, presumed general ref is broken) of being one of the richest people and little besides that. Not seeing any in-depth coverage in my BEFORE.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I was looking through users from southeast Texas and I came across your account. I need help with a discussion on an article. See link:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Universal_Coin_%26_Bullion

I need more Keep comments and I was hoping you can add to that. I reworked the article so I don’t think it sounds like an advert anymore. If you feel it needs to be deleted could you not comment and say it should be deleted? Currently it might get deleted anyway but I just need more Keep comments if at all possible. Never mind on that. I got another delete comment so it will probably get deleted now. Oh well. Excel23 (talk) 14:07, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
