Article Licensing
[edit]Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...
- ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
- ...all articles...
using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles.
- Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. -- Ram-Man 17:57, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)

2. He was told by the Nguyen Dynasty to shut down his website and return all work that belonged to the Nguyen Dynasty.
3. The Copyright holder for the Cuong De biography is the Nguyen Dynasty noted here The Revolutionary Prince Cuong-De
4. This is true because NguyenHue points out above that the biography belongs to his Geocites site The Revolutionary Prince Cuong-De
5. He was instructed by the Nguyen Dynasty to again close his website but simply chose to delete photos of Prince Nguyen Phuc Buu Chanh and all information related to Nguyen Dynasty because he was EXPELLED and kept WITHOUT PERSMISSION all biographies and research that was submitted by Nguyen Dynasty Scholars.
8. Atheism
[edit]Subud
[edit]Pursuant to our discussion about Subud and atheism/agnosticism (see [1]), the Humanist Manifesto II, in part, says that:
--Authoritarian religion does a disservice to humanity; --There isn't enough evidence for the supernatural; --Nature is primary rather than God; --God won't save us, we must save ourselves; and, --Fear of Hell is harmful because it takes the focus away from life here and now.
Many folks in Subud would agree with this. My particular viewpoint goes along the lines of Process theology, which is directly in line with these statements and other statements like them. The problem with your point of view above is that you are arguing against an outdated version of theism (from as far back as the Middle ages). Some of these outdated ideas are that God is omnipotent and thus controls everything, that human beings have little or no power and God determines human destiny, that God is a personal entity and is supernatural, that classical or authoritarian religion is acceptable, that theism cannot solve the problem of evil, etc. None of these ideas (and a host of others, see, e.g., "Ominpotence and Other Theological Mistakes" by Charles Hartshorne) make much sense to a process theist, or to those (some of which are in Subud) who are open-minded theists.
Also, I'm not sure what you're saying about Subud being "obscure." Could you clarify this? Aliman 09:59, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
re: User:Jimmyvanthach
[edit]Good afternoon, Duncharris. I noticed your VfD nomination on Royal Lao Government in Exile. In it, you mentioned the Arbitration Committee's decision on User:Jimmyvanthach. I was not aware they'd made a decision. We have had an old VfD discussion thread that has been waiting for a long time for that decision. Would you be familiar enough with the case to go to Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Phan Lien and close out the discussion? Boxing Day
[edit]I changed the Boxing Day article, because it seems we're no longer calling the 26th Christmas Sunday and the 27th Boxing Day when Christmas Day is a Saturday. The last time it happened, in 1999, the Radio and TV Times, and indeed everyone I know, called the 26th Boxing Day, and the same is happening again this year. I've left the article as you put it back to for now, but the people on the Boxing Day discussion page seem to be of a similar view. Perhaps refer this for arbitration? Best wishes, Jess Cully (talk) 9 Dec 2004, 20:20 UCT

Boxing Day
[edit]Ah, User:Jess Cully had it right. Boxing Day itself is always on the 26th - the day off work associated with it may move (just as if November 11th - or any other holiday on a fixed calendar day - is on a Sunday, people get the following Monday off) to the day following, but Boxing Day stays on the day after Christmas. You should revert your reversion... Noel (talk) 11:56, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Boxing Day
[edit]Thanks for the support, Noel. I've done the rv.
No offence meant, Dunc - I actually liked the custom of calling the 26th Christmas Sunday and the 27th Boxing Day when Christmas Day was a Saturday. Alas, the custom has fallen out of use. Everyone I've spoken to about their plans for Christmas this year calls the 26th Boxing Day; all the 'Christmas Opening Hours' signs at my local shops do likewise; as do the Radio and TV Times (who themselves started the 26th CS/27th BD practice back in 1954). In the face of such an overwhelming tide, it is futile for we purists to kick against the pricks. We have to bow to general usage. Sorry.Jess Cully 16:51, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
ukrailways.wikicities.com
[edit]I've started a new wiki at wikicities to concentrate on the history of railways in the UK. This will in time, hopefully, provide a space to greatly expand on what is available on wikipedia. For example, individual pages for locomotives, signal boxes and the like. I've picked on you as a likely contributor from looking at the edit history for the LMS and then at your personal edit history.
At the moment I am busy seeding the wiki with pages from wikipedia, with a few minor edits, before annoucing its existance to the wider railway world. I'm contacting a few people who seen to edit railway articles on wikipedia at first, as they are already enthusiastic about the wiki system. I would be interested in you views on how I can move it forward and the structure of the wiki. I'll keep an eye on this talk page, my talk page or you could email me at richard_bedwell@hotmail.com

Hi Duncharris: The article on Kents Hill School has been refactored and expanded, with additional work underway. Looks great Duncan, correct as far as I can remember the formulas without cracking a book. Need to read over it more carefully though. Only one thing, I would reorganize the sections so that the mathematics sections are confined to those sections specifically. i.e. you can talk about the concepts of Variations in population size non-mathematically (then mathematically define them later), ditto Hardy-Weinberg principle. Also, no need to preference everything with "In <discipline-name> foo is..." because the category system effectively does that for us, and in the case of Ne and HWP, it doesn't need to function as a disambiguation because HWP doesn't exist in any other discipline... ;-) Lexor|Talk 14:30, Feb 26, 2005 (UTC)

Hi! As part of the Wiki Syntax cleanup effort, I came across a broken redirect from German Bight to Heligoland Bight, which you put up a few months ago. Such redirects are usually meant to be deleted, but there are two pages linking to it, and the redirect does seem to make sense (from what I gather from these articles). Could you possibly be persuaded to write a stub for Heligoland Bight? Thanks! --Fbriere 21:05, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Not to sound picky (though I probably will anyway), but are you sure this redirect is appropriate? From what I glanced from the article, Heligoland and Heligoland Bight are not the same thing, are they? The reason I'm asking is that we now end up with German Bight being a double redirect, which is a Bad Thing™. Sure, you could change its target, but that's going to mess things up if a real Heligoland Bight article were to be written.
- Of course, it's possible the two terms are the same, in which case you're welcome to adjust the redirect, call me an idiot, and get a free pizza for your trouble. :)

[edit]The IPU idea addresses an outdated notion of deity. Attributes such as "supernatural," "outside human perception," "great spiritual power" (these phrases were taken from the Wikipedia article on the IPU)and even "omnipotence" don't necessarily apply to deity or God. To claim that they do is a textbook example of the Straw Person fallacy (in fact, I use that example in class to demonstrate to my students an example of the SP fallacy).

Moving Darwin, Northern Territory
[edit]Hi, Duncharris. I was a little bit surprised to see the changes at Darwin you made a few days ago; I was wondering what your reasons for deleting the Darwin redirect to Charles Darwin and then moving Darwin, Northern Territory to Darwin. I recognize that Darwin, Northern Territory is a territory capital and is quite important; however, I believe that an unqualified "Darwin", to most people, would refer to the naturalist and that Darwin should therefore redirect to Charles Darwin. Or if not that, then the disambiguation page should be there, in my opinion. What do you think? (And please let me know if this was discussed somewhere that I overlooked). Thanks! — Knowledge Seeker দ 07:03, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Articles should refer to a person's full name, always Charles Darwin not just Darwin. The capital of an Australian territory is quite important. Dunc|☺ 09:17, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I agree, and I fully support leaving Charles Darwin at its current title. However, in my opinion, an unqualified "Darwin" usually refers to Darwin the scientist, not Darwin the city. I am not trying to belittle the capital's importance but I feel that the scientist is a far more common meaning for the name "Darwin" and so Darwin should redirect to Charles Darwin. I realize there is room for disagreement, although it might have been nice to bring this up on the talk page or WP:RM, since it is not an obvious change; especially since it was a complex revert and you had to delete the original Darwin page. I also would have left a note on the talk page explaining what you did so that others, especially nonadministrators who can't see the deletion history, would understand what happened. — Knowledge Seeker দ 04:18, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

On formatting images
[edit]Hello. You're mistaken about placing images on the page. The following tips from my Userpage will help you, I hope, while you might keep in mind Thoreau's remark, A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. Consistency is important within pages and among closely connected pages, but its only purpose is to serve the reader.
Not all Wikipedia pages need have identical formats, with the first illustration squared top right, though more than one Mediator is convinced this is a requirement. Some images are neutral in their format possibilities, others not:
- 1. Images need to face into the page.
- 2. Vanishing points need to lie on the page.
- 3. Sources of light in an image need to come from the center of the page.
Even if you have never thought about page layout, a moment's reflection will demonstrate the reasonableness of these three axioms, practiced by all professionals. --Wetman 04:49, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Reason I moved Lancaster, England back.
[edit]Dear Friend, Lancaster is a popular name of many places in the world. Lancaster, England is one of the most popular references to the name, however it is not the most popular. That title actually goes to the city in Pennsylvania, although, Lancaster, England is the original. Not to mention, that neither the English, or the Pennsylvania city is the largest of the Lancaster family. That title goes to the California city. So, Lancaster, England does not carry the same weight of a single title city such as London or Los Angeles. So, I reverted it back to the Lancaster, England page where it should be. I also placed boldened type to the 3 primary Lancasters to separate them from the others so that they would be more easily identifyable. Thank you for your understanding in this matter. --Anon 07:09, Apr 20, 2005 (UTC)
And you seem biased to your own Lancaster. The point is, there are 3 cities worthy of the title. If neither San Jose can have it... neither can a particular Lancaster. Leave it the way it is or I will appeal to the administrators to have it protected. --Anon 00:11, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)
Note that Winchester is also liable to being moved back, as this has been discussed twice before on the talk page concluding that the main page should be the dab. Joe D (t) 13:08, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Yes, sorry about that.

Research project on wiki contributors
[edit]Hello-
I am aware that this is not the typical message usually posted, so I would like to apologize and ask for your kind understanding. I am a PhD student at Syracuse University School of Information Studies. My advisor and I are working on a research project on contributors to Wikis. This project received Institutional Review Board Approval number 05048. I would like to have a brief email dialog with you about your experience as a Wikipedia contributor. Please respond to this posting or send me an email at wikiresearch@hotmail.com, if you would be willing to answer a couple of quick questions. I would like to assure you that your comments will remain confidential.
Best regards, -Isabelle Fagnot
Why is the article not notable
[edit]\Did u see? the links that are enclosed in his article? I am familiar with Paul Bouche. How many of your listings have won an Emmy award? As a matter of fact I was searching for him after Discussion and presentation by him @ Miami International University of Art and Design.
He has been arround for many years and has been an inspiration for many young hispanics as myself. I guess you are not familiar with the field of spanish media. That is ok. But know I also searched The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, La Opinion (Los Angeles Main Hispanic Paper), Even Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Hispanic Business magazine have featured articles about him. Perhaps you should too. I don't see anyone on the list of comments that strike me as Hispanic or Latino. Ask arround. Even though you probably know no hispanic americans.
Just because you dont know someone doesn't mean they are not relevant for our community 35 million in the US and 400,000,000 arround the world.

[edit]I noticed your speedy of Cleanliness Is Next to Ed in the deletion log and thought it looked a little dubious, so took a look at the main Ed, Edd n Eddy article. Unggrh. Looks like almost all of the episodes' articles are similar placeholders. Could you take a look at them? —Korath (Talk) 11:23, Apr 29, 2005 (UTC)
Ed, Edd n Eddy
[edit]I have continued my work on these pages since you looked last...
Season 1 episodes have just been completed, and am working on season 2.
A question, tho...
I think that the 'subject' Ed, Edd n Eddy should be the CATEGORY Ed, Edd n Eddy.
The category matches the subject now, but my question is: What tags to I put into the original article to suggest that this be moved, or cross-linked to the category?
Am rather new at this, and would appreciate any suggestions you might be able to make.
BTW: Please look at the format for the sub-articles in the 1st season and tell me if you think it's ok... Have been trying to make all of them look the same, hense the 'blank' templates. As I add the text, the 'blank part goes away.
Hi there
[edit]Please see discussion on Paul Bouche. New information relevant for undeletion has been posted. As well as undeletion requests by two hispanics besides myself (one lives in Tokio)Please post any repply to this on the "undeletion ddiscussion page since I am just a user not a member. Thanks.

[edit]Our neo-eugenicist friend is making more noise at Talk:Eugenics. I assume he, like all of the other of his sort which periodically show up and demand that the page be about the wonderful and glorious future of human modification (and of course all of that stuff in the past is far distant and was never really eugenics anyway), will eventually realize that there is little space for POV pushing around here, but in the meantime your reasoned thoughts would be appreciated. --Fastfission 16:50, 3 May 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, I don't know who is worse in the end -- the people who want to give a biased history of eugenics and evolution because they like eugenics, or the people who do it because they hate evolution. It has an odd tugging effect -- one side wants to whitewash the whole thing, the other wants to portray it in as unfavorable a light as possible, while I have to insist against the objections of both of steering the middling and ideologically unsatsifying path of historical truth! As such I get accused of polar opposite POVs no matter what! Ah, I just can't win... --Fastfission 00:32, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

Kennedy Fried Chicken
[edit]...but I don't think it's proper to delete an article that is under discussion in VfD, I don't think Wikipedia articles have "authors," and while I think the requests of article contributors should be given due weight in VfD I don't think articles should be deleted on "author's request." The phenomenon of restaurants with names like "Kennedy Fried Chicken," "Kansas Fried Chicken," "Mississippi Fried Chicken," etc. is amusing enough to be worth a mention in Kentucky Fried Chicken, so what it really boils down to here is whether Kennedy Fried Chicken should be a redirect or simply nonexistent. [edit]I noticed a typo in Template:nonCommercialProvided, but do not have the authority to fix it. "Licenced" should be spelt "licensed", as "licence" is only the noun and not the verb form. Thanks. —Wereon 16:53, May 11, 2005 (UTC)
Template:History
[edit]Thank you for your good thoughts. I think there's a misunderstanding. I didn't intend it as a link to the history of a page itself – Wikipedia already provides such a link in the skin. The template is meant to refer to any other page. I use it e.g. on my homepage as some sort of a watchlist (that was, before i found out you can build customized watchlists) and to allow people to check which contributions i made to pages. — Sebastian (talk) 20:05, 2005 May 14 (UTC)
I now reverted your changes since they completely destroyed the function of the template. — Sebastian (talk) 20:13, 2005 May 15 (UTC)

Adminship
[edit]Eh, I'm pretty argumentative, get frustrated pretty quickly, and have a hard time being universally cordial to people who I think are malicious cranks (which include a number of regular users). Though I would never go so far as to let any of that bleed into any sorts of administrator abilities, it seems like more hassle than it is worth (I already get the "you are a bully" line because I cite off-line sources to back up my points, lord knows the trouble I would cause if I had any institutional sanction). It would be helpful in fixing up vandalism and so forth but I've been able to do an okay job at that as it is without it, so I think I'll stay a "normal" user and feel free to get irritated towards and be suspicious of people in a way which would feel unbecoming as an administrator. But thank you for the sentiment. --Fastfission 19:27, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit]I see you voted delete on Rumer Willis in VFD. Merging the info as you suggested would require saving the history for the GFDL, so you might want to change it to either a merge and redirect or just a full delete. Mgm|(talk) 10:15, May 30, 2005 (UTC)

[edit]If you are into rap music, the girl in question was probably mostly known for the video for Bounce Ya On My Pole (you probably HAD to be in New Orleans to really see it), she did with Ruda about 5 years ago. steam train photos
[edit]Thanks for the link. I have my own photos of some LMS locos if you want to use them as well. Locos in question: 6233 Dutchess of Sutherland, 5690 Leander, 6201 Princess Elizabeth, 45157 The Glasgow Highlander, 8F 48151, 2MT 46441 all from Crewe Works open day in 2003. Nguyen Dynasty POV-pushers strike again
[edit]Some time ago I went to great effort to write several biographies of the nguyen kings, that were balanced, showing both good and bad points. I can list the books which supplied the information if anyone would like to check up on it -fact is they were not a very popular dynasty. However, I have noticed that almost all of these have been changed, to very N-NPOV bio summaries giving nothing but a rosy spin on everything these kings did. What is more (shock of shocks) they are direct copies of the summaries on the website here http://www.oocities.com/imperialvietnam/nguyenemperors.html which you will remember Jimmy/Lindgren/TranVanBa were known to copy & paste from (I have noticed the page now has a warning about the Buu Chanh group as a result of this). Because of a lack of promised action in the past, and seeing how systematic this historical revisionism is, I have stopped after changing back one article. Would you care to comment? Can *anything* be done to stop this sort of garbage? It's non-neutral point of view, as well as plagarism, and I remain convinced all part of pushing modern claims to power by the Buu Chanh pretender. -Nguyen Van Tuan

[edit]I saw your edits on Intelligent design. If you want to edit the intro, fine, although if you check the Talk there's good reason why it is the way it stands. But please don't feed the troll.--ghost 20:47, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I disagree because I'd checked his contributions list and found that he'd already exceeded the 3RR rule on 3 seperate articles this afternoon. The editors on those pages refered to his actions as vandalism, and responded accordingly. Although I agree that his has a right to a POV, and to edit in theory, he refuses to respect the community. Therefore, the community has no need to make an exception to it's rules.
- BTW, if he'd bothered to read 3 paragraphs into the article, he'd have found the exact criticism he used. It was moved there as part of a larger effort.--ghost 21:05, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

- Reviewing Wikipedia's policy on soapboxes, I've moved my discussion to my talk page but my viewpoint has not changed. The article began as a soapbox and later revised. The new revision has toned the original version down but that doesn't change what happened. You say that you've been polite. And I say, that I've been polite to you as well. I don't troll. If you really want the truth, my encounter with this so called "defense of tradition, family, and property" was not coincidental. These folks came to me, not the other way around. They were doing the trolling, I wasn't. Ariele 14:25, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
