Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Smokers
Smokers was proposed for deletion. This page is an archive of the discussion about the proposed deletion. This page is no longer live. Further comments should be made on the article's talk page rather than here so that this page is preserved as an historic record. The result of the debate was to keep the article,
There are smokers all over the world, not just Queen's University. And this article fails to establish what makes this version notable enough for an encyclopedia article. RickK 22:37, Nov 11, 2004 (UTC)
- This deletion reason makes no sense. If the article can be expanded, expand it, don't delete it.
Keep.Even better, what zoney said. anthony 警告 22:56, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC) - Redirect to Tobacco smoking, since that's what I'd expect to find info on if I searched for smokers. Shane King 23:34, Nov 11, 2004 (UTC)
Merge with Queen's University, Kingston (that page can afford a section on this tradition). Redirect this page to tobacco smoking. In fact, I do feel that what I have suggested can be done without the VfD rigmarole, but hey, I guess we'll let this sit here for a week. zoney ♣ talk 23:42, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)- Whilst a disambiguation to Tobacco smoking might be smart, I'm fairly sure 'smokers' is a reasonably common - although archaic - term for social events like this, generally at universities (often they had the added implication that it was a male-only event) - Queen's may retain it, but it certainly wasn't unique to there historically. A more general article on the practice would be both encylopedic and interesting if anyone feels the inclination Shimgray 00:33, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Redirect to tobacco smoking. We can't merge and not redirect to the same spot, without hand-crafting the history merger, too. "Smokers" as parties is archaic, and it's about fourth on the list of expected meanings, so there is no way to redirect to the university. Sometimes, it's just sad that the author didn't consider before creating the article, and it's not our fault. Geogre 02:04, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- I prepended a disambig pointer to Smokers. I changed smoker from a redirect to a disambig. Anthony Appleyard 08:06, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- These events exist at other colleges besides Queens. At least, I remember that at Ball State University in the 1970s, a "smoker" was an occasion where frat boys got dressed up in tuxedoes to smoke cigars while, of course, getting drunk. I suppose this is notable enough for an article; generalize and keep. Smerdis of Tlön 12:53, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Keep and expand as per Shimgray's comments above. Trade union branches and socialist societies used to hold 'smokers' in the 20s and 30s. Would be interesting to find out where it comes from. Mattley 17:54, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- The term is archaic, but not obscure, and it is qute general. In the 1940s or '50s (and probably into the '60s) in the U.S. (and possibly elsewhere), a smoker would usually have implied an all-male party (or one where the only women were hired sex workers), often showing blue movies. -- Jmabel | Talk 23:03, Nov 12, 2004 (UTC)
- Keep (if only for the sake of disambiguation), but remove the reference to Queen's University unless it's given context that tells us why theirs are notable. -Sean Curtin 01:38, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)
- Why is the reference to Queen's so offensive? Perhaps Queen's Smokers are not _legendary_ but they still go on. How many other schools still have Smokers? If so.."don't throw the baby out with the bathwater".. just addem'! Or perhaps the defintion could be expanded to include the different types.. A) Current College Smokers (ala Queen's) B) All-Mall Frat Party Smokers C) Trade Union Smokers? -Shane (the author)
- A bit of background. I added a definition for the word "Smoker" because it was linked to from the entry "Clark Hall Pub". Yet the word had no definition. Am I correct is suspecting this is because the definition was added previously and killed by "Deletionist"? -Shane (the author)
