Deleting my entries

Not sure what your criteria are for "famous" glbt people, but with over 1,000,000 readers of my books, and columns in various magazines and newspapers and journals, I'm told I have fairly high name recognition at least in some circles. You make me feel that my efforts are a vanity-plea, when my goal is to join the list of reasonably well known bisexuals because I think it is important for folks to be out in a very visible way. I will certainly bow to the wishes of the Wiki community, but you seem particularly intent on removing my entries, and I wondered why. Feel free to write to jliberty@ActonEquality.org for private correspondence, if you prefer. - --jesse

What's the deal (if any) with you and User:Bonnie Bianco? She appears to have copied part of your user page and you immediately reverted most of her link spam. Is this a long standing feud? Is adding her to vandalism in progress necessary? --fvw 19:08, 2004 Oct 27 (UTC)

Not as far as I'm aware. She modified a few of the music pages I watch, adding the same lyrics site, a few days after I'd reverted an anon making the same changes. So I reverted them again. Why she nicked by user page, I'll never know. No need for further action unless it escalates -- GWO

Your Gay rights timeline revert

You said in an edit comment: "(rv: please don't hide removal of perfectly correct and relevant information behind a "minor edit" mark. Also, don't remove said perfectly correct and relevant information.)"

Thank you for being a watchdog. I want to assure you that I was not censoring, just correcting a minor error by an anonymous user who posted information in the wrong article.

I removed the Nov. 2 as a minor edit for the following reasons:

1. Date-specific entries belong in the specific "year in gay rights" pages. Therefore the date-specific information was not relevant to the article.
2. The information was already in the 2004 in gay rights article here, therefore was redundant.

Being that the information was origainally added by an anonymous poster and the information was redundant since it already existed on the correct "year in" page, I simply deleted it as a well-meaning, but minor error made by an inexerpienced first-time editor.

In the future, when you revert edits by registered users, it is polite practice to tell them so on their talk page. Thanks again for keeping such a watchful eye on WP, and in particular the gay rights articles. - [[User:Davodd|DAVODD «TALK»]] 04:04, Nov 10, 2004 (UTC)

list of exponential topics

Delete, no need to have duplicate data structures. If it gets kept it should at least be renamed, List of exponential topics ≠ List of topics to do with exponentiation, though I have no idea what it does mean. --fvw* 19:40, 2004 Nov 11 (UTC)

List of exponential topics is definitely a better name than list of topics to do with exponentiation or anything similar, because the topics are not primarily about exponentiation, but about exponential functions with fixed base, with the argument in the exponent. Those are among the most important functions in mathematics. As for "duplicate data structures", a category is a primitive thing that cannot duplicate what a topics list can do. This topics list now has an invisible link to the discussion page for each article so that clicking on "related changes" will include those. Many topics lists such list of combinatorics topics are organized, and a category lacks that ability (that hasn't yet been done with list of exponential topics, nor is it long enough for there to be much need, but it could evolve). Furthermore, notice that your suggestion that the list be renamed would not be easy to carry out if it were a category: you can't change the name of a category without editing every page that it links to. ...and just in case you missed it:

A topics list cannot be superseded by a category. Categories are a tool of primitive cave-dwellers who communicate only by grunting; topics lists are used by civilized people who can read and write and have refined tastes. I would rather abolish categories completely.

• You cannot change the title of a category without editing every page that links to it.

• You cannot exploit invisible links to discussion pages in a category the way you can on a topics list (so that when you click on "related changes" you see changes to discussion pages as well as to articles).

• You cannot put "red links" in a category, inviting people to create pages.

• You cannot adapt the organization and layout of the list of articles to the topic.

• You have to read that "There are 1 subcategories [sic!] ...."

If we're going to use categories to replace topics lists, why don't we abolish computers while we're at it and just use paper? And then abolish that and carve words in stone? And then abolish language and go back to grunting. And then abolish communication. Michael Hardy 00:36, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Why delete?

Hi, I'd appreciate it if you would qualify the delete vote you placed on an article that i created: textfiles.com. As your's was basically the first delete vote, since not even the nominator wanted to see it deleted, I think it is important to provide a reason for why you want it deleted. My analogy was specifically to a bookstore, not a huge library. The Library of Alexandria and Louvre would be compared to The Library of Congress (at least with a U.S. mindset) and the Louvre today, not to textfiles. And that there is BM also elsewhere than in Norway. And it relates to text written above, where there's a long text about Norway and how the thing started there. But maybe my statement was unclear. People use encylopedias to learn about things that they don't know about. There is a page for the Klingon Language which is a fictional language! Surely, one page for a language used by an ethnic minority is just as worthy as that for a fake language used on tv. There are over 6,000 languages. Strange Apostrophes

I've noticed you've started editing entries and inserting strange apostrophes and double quotes into them. I think because you are not using the HTML entity codes for them, that they will not show up in web browsers other than Internet Explorer for Windows. At least, your apostrophes show up as question marks with Safari or FireFox.

Codepages

Hey, thanks for trying to fixup Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2004/Candidate statements, however you brought it back to its original broken state. The English Wikipedia is in the ISO-8859-1 character encoding (alas). Curly quotes, emdashes and such are not legal characters (you can ofcourse insert them as HTML entities). See Help:Special characters for more info. (Oh, and just for pedantries sake, I didn't insert the windows codepage stuff, I (or my browser, to be precise) replaced the illegal characters with ?'s (not the most elegant solution, admittedly, but you can hardly expect my browser to know it's CP-1252 when the server's claiming it's ISO-8859-1)). --fvw* 00:49, 2004 Nov 28 (UTC)

Positive. All modern browsers render it correctly, even under linux. My browser (opera) renders correctly too, but in good engineering tradition is more strict in what it sends than in what it receives. What is odd is that a non-microsoft browser would actually generate CP-1252 characters instead of proper ISO-8859-1. Or did you do a partial revert? --fvw* 00:57, 2004 Nov 28 (UTC)
