Why don't we keep the French city with the accent, thus using it as a disambiguation tool? - User:Olivier

translated text

[edit]

Much of the text in this article appears to have been translated by a non-native English speaker: the sentence construction is unusual (e.g. 'The schools of Orléans early acquired great prestige' and 'Among those who studied or lectured there are quoted' are two glaring examples). Perhaps there is a French scholar who would be willing to improve this?

Pronunciation?

[edit]

Could someone add the correct French pronunciation to the beginning of the article? Thanks. Sima Yi (talk) 14:23, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

City vs Commune

[edit]

This article uses the word "city" to describe Orléans, whereas the French article uses the word "commune". While a commune is roughly equivalent to a city for us English speakers, there is an article called Communes of France that we could pair with the word commune as a link. Assuming the French article is correct and I'm making the right conclusion, we should refer to the settlement type by its French terminology in an effort to educate English speaking Wikipedians as to the nature of French administrative divisions. Any objections? Suggestions? Thoughts? --JBC3 (talk) 04:51, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of days with no response, I'm going to make the change. If it turns out there is discussion about it later it can always be undone. --JBC3 (talk) 04:07, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well it seems a little odd. Commune is not equivalent to city, it can for example have a few hundred inhabitants. I think it's like saying "Peterborough is a unitary authority in Cambridgeshire. " Rich Farmbrough, 14:02, 27 July 2009 (UTC).[reply]
Does that mean you agree with my conclusion or not? --JBC3 (talk) 03:03, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
