Title
[edit]- While most video and DVD releases title the film Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, the original title, still plainly visible in the film, is Space Soldiers Conquer the Universe (or, arguably, Flash Gordon: Space Soldiers Conquer the Universe).
I don't believe a word of it. For why:
- My copy (admittedly on video) clearly says Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, not a Space Soldier in sight.
- If Space Soldiers... is the true title of this one, why are Space Soldiers and Space Soldiers' Trip to Mars not the true titles of the preceding serials?
- IMDb says that the three Space Soldiers titles are later titles given to the respective serials when they were shown on television. (Presumably, though it doesn't actually say so, for the benefit of people who've never heard of Flash Gordon.)
- Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe has the significant advantage of actually connecting with something in the story.
Cumulative result: as previously stated, I don't believe a word of it. --Paul A 12:39, 12 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- My copy (DVD) says "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" on the box, but when you watch the episodes themselves, it says
- FLASH GORDON
- SPACE SOLDIERS CONQUER THE UNIVERSE
- FLASH GORDON
- which is why I put that in the article (and honestly it makes more sense for space soldiers to "conquer the universe" than for Flash to do it — good guys don't conquer, they save). I suppose, though, that it could be from the TV version, although I don't know how you'd tell. The lettering and stuff certainly looks like it was from that time period. -Branddobbe 16:29, Jul 12, 2004 (UTC)
You mean like this? Wow. The title card on my copy looks completely different; like this. So obviously one version or the other has been re-edited. From the reading up I've been doing, there appears to be a consensus that yours is the re-edited one, from when the serials were shown on TV during the 1950s - there was also a made-for-TV Flash Gordon series at the time, and King Features didn't want people to get them mixed up. (I can start throwing URLs at you if you're not prepared to take my word for it.)
The title is a joke: in the final episode, Ming goes completely nuts and proclaims that not only is he ruler of the universe, he is the universe - so after his defeat, Zarkov suggests that they send a message back to Earth announcing that Flash has conquered the universe. (I didn't say it was a good joke.) --Paul A 03:06, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)
