I am redirecting this to "social network." There is little factual information here, and it is repeated in further context there.

[edit]

I arrived at Social networking from a link in the article Karrimor, in which the context was the discussion of the practice of social networking as a business technique during the mid to late 20th century. I did not expect to be linked to an article describing online social media platforms.

It seems that the Social networking article was originally about the concept of social networking as a social phenomenon, distinct from but facilitated by online platforms. Then, it gradually became more of a discussion about online social networking platforms before being redirected; first to the Social and Behavioural Science concept of a Social network and then to the article about social networking services. There was also at one time a sort of disambiguation that referred to Workplace networking.

I would change the link in the Karrimor article to point to the most appropriate article, but none of the existing articles seem to fit. None of them is discussing social networking as a human behaviour that is exploited for business purposes, in a way that acknowledges that it is not purely a phenomenon of the Internet age. Digital marketing, Social media marketing and Enterprise social networking are perhaps closer to the mark, but again they do not really acknowledge any pre-Internet practices.
