[edit]I included a photo of the entire dog, head to tail from the side. Also, I think there is an inaccuracy in the history. According to Paul Morrison (source at the bottom of the page--I don't know how to do footnotes), Doc Pfeiffer believed the AWS was the product of Curley Coated retrievers mixed with Field Spaniels. Pfeiffer did not deny the presence of Irish Water Spaniel blood, but he thought it had been added during the 1920s--looking at one of the surviving lines would seem to confirm this. Comment
[edit]- Mix of singular and plural throughout article
- Lead “The American Water Spaniel (AWS)” — foreshadow abbreviation.
- Lead “a breed with even temperateness” — even temperament?
- Lead “The AWS was involved in the development of the Boykin Spaniel.” — Doubt expressed in the body of the article. The AWS could be an ancestor breed of the Boykin Spaniel?
- History “He advertised the dogs wildly” — widely?
- Appearance “As American Water Spaniels have never been overly popular, they have been left relatively unchanged from when they were first developed in the 19th century.” — Cumbersome. Its limited popularity restricted development, and the American Water Spaniel has remained relatively unchanged from the 19th century.?
- Health “Due to allowing pack breeding to take place early on in their development, natural selection was allowed to occur and led to a positive influence and today's breed does not suffer from many of the issues that more popular breeds do.” — Convoluted. Pack breeding early in its development led to a level of genetic variation, so the hereditary conditions of more popular breeds are not common in the AWS.?
- Images Dogs should face into the page if possible. Alt text for those using text readers. Repetitive breed name in captions. “Using its coat” Does it have a choice?
- References Limited number, but there seems to be little published material. The AWS does not feature in many of the general guides to dog breeds.
- Hip dysplasia linked to disambig page — Hip dysplasia (canine)
- Online references need an access date. Marj (talk) 20:55, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
- Made the edits as suggested. While images are preferred to face into the article text, they shouldn't do so where it disrupts section headings (and shouldn't be flipped in image edits). Also there is no requirement for the online references to have an access date - was just told this in a FA nomination. Miyagawa (talk) 21:41, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
- Pardon me for interrupting, but just a point: Online book references (Google books, etc) don't need access dates. Online web references (society webpages, breeder pages, etc) do need access dates. As far as I can tell, this article follows that convention, so you probably already know this, but I figured that, since I stumbled across the review, I would clarify this just for posterity. Dana boomer (talk) 23:55, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- Dana, thanks for the clarification, that's what I meant I just hadn't explained it particulary well! :) Miyagawa (talk) 12:24, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- Still lots of combinations of singular and plural, despite fixes by other editors.
- they remains a rare breed
- A versatile hunting dog, they are
- They are a medium sized dog,
- The coats of the American Water Spaniel
- the AWS is less exhuberant than the English Springer Spaniel, but are as skilled in retrieval as Labrador ...
- They are a one family dog Marj (talk) 21:15, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
