- From WP:DAB A short description of the common general meaning of a word can be appropriate for helping the reader determine context. My reading of the intent of this aspect of WP:DAB is that it seeks to discourage simple lists of dictionary definitions, not isolated instances. It's common for dab pages to include definitions, and this one actually points to a Wikipedia article (this is not always the case). The term is common vernacular, at least in the UK, for this particular phenomenon (condition? state? occurrence? ;-). It is not unlikely that it may be searched for. I see no reason not to include the disambiguation, and it might be good if Mikkalai could point to specific policy backing up his point, since he seems to be in a minority. However, I would certainly be happy taking the issue to a third party, who may say yes or no, depending on whether policy actually does exclude slang terms from dab pages (I cannot find anything that says that is the case, but that does not mean it is not so). - OK Since you feel strong about it, I will no longer contest it, although I still disagree.
- BTW, the key word in the quoted A short description of the common..." is "a short", i.e., dab pages must not give elaborate definitions, e.g. in Star (disambiguation) we see "Star, in astronomy and cosmology" (enough to "determine the context"), and not "a massive, luminous ball of plasma". `'Miikka 01:00, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- No, I don't feel strongly about it- I only noticed this yesterday, it's not a big deal, although I think your decision is sensible and in keeping with policy. I am a bit surprised that you think the current 8 word description is unnecessarily elaborate however...if you can think of a way to shorten it without changing the meaning, I certainly would have no objection. If you object to this on length grounds, then we may have a lot of work to do throughout the encyclopaedia, starting with (for example) Star (disambiguation) where I can see at least a couple of dozen far longer and more elaborate definitions....
