Howards military service

[edit]

Your edit on Howards hypocrisy to national service is very well crafted. But I warn you there may be a lot of oppostion to its presence. I will support you if others choose to wipe it. 128.250.99.135 00:43, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Was your aim also to paint Howard as a hypocrite, or is that 128.250.99.135's intention alone? Andjam 06:03, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Albatross2147,

I noticed you reverted the citation needed thingo which is fair enough. Given that to prove the somewhat bleeding obvious is nearly as hard as proving a negative can you wait a bit before striking out the alleged PoV statement?

A little bit, but not too long.

Also at the risk of entering into a bitter ploemic (which I certainly don't want to do) I would be interested to know exactly what your objection is to the statement that in the 1960s he was a supporter of both NS and Aust's participation in the Vn War. I don't see how it could have been otherwise.

Well, people have made mistakes before. For example this rant claims that Family First were presumably "into the Iraq war like a rat up a drainpipe" when the policy platform was that they disapproved of the invasion. (I sent them an email in December 2004, and they're yet to correct the statement) The article originally talked about Howard "vociferously" supporting the war, which is hardly NPOV language. Even if he weren't in favour of the war and conscription, he may have decided to stay silent to avoid giving the North Vietnamese comfort. Frankly, I'm a bit tired of "fake but accurate" attitude some people have. Andjam 06:03, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Even though we suspect it, we can't assume that he did hold the same views as his party without evidence, nor does add much to talk about the views of his party as evidence of his own inconsistency. For eg, after the Vietnam war the Liberal party decided that South Vietnamese who had assisted the Australian forces should be evacuated. There was only one minister who wanted to leave them behind in the hands of the North Vietnamese. Guess who. Regards, Ben Aveling 07:27, 27 January 2006 (UTC) PS. I did manage to find a quote for you.[reply]

So long as it's from a reliable NPOV source, well ... I still wouldn't exactly be thrilled about the inclusion, given that one person wanted it included in order to paint Howard as a hypocrite. But if it's got a good citation, I won't try to get the section removed unless other people worry about how notable it is. Andjam 08:01, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All depends on how it's used, really. Same as any other fact. Regards, Ben Aveling 08:32, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the article Alan Jones from the "List of GLBT people" category. If Alan Jones hasn't specifically stated in public that he belongs within this category, then it is not for us to put him in such a category based upon mere rumour and innuendo. - Mark 02:06, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry you feel that way about my action there. I am merely cautioning against presenting something as fact when we don't know for sure that it is. In my opinion, it is still perfectly legitimate to discuss the gay claims within the text of the article. Hi Albatross2147,

I only just noticed your "re John Howard Talk" section on my talk page (not that it is a big issue, as the issues have been mentioned in the article talk page). I typically only look at the bottom of my user talk page, so if you have any further messages, can you start a new section unless there's an existing section near the bottom of the page? Minor Edits

[edit]

Remember to mark your edits as minor when, but only when, they genuinely are (see Wikipedia:Minor edit). Marking a major change as a minor one, or vice versa, is considered poor etiquette. The rule of thumb, is that an edit of a page that consists of spelling corrections, formatting, and minor rearranging of text should be flagged as a 'minor edit'. Dear Albatross

Would you please have a look at this disputed column and give an opinion by reading the citations and external links - or better still write a new article. It appears to be badly written, repetitious, and lacking neutrality. As it is a current dispute surely it should be no more than a paragraph with links to reputable reports. This is regarding the article and talk pages of John Howard. Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not add unreferenced negative information to biographies of living persons, as you did to John Howard. Thank you. Andjam 11:59, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your edits at John Howard, it seems that you have some personal recollections of Howard's behaviour at Vietnam rallies in the 60s. Why not take it to a journalist (you know, like an ex-Media Watch host who seems to like researching Howard's history) rather than put it on Wikipedia, where I'm not sure it really belongs. Everything that is in a wikipedia article should be supported by a reference to a reliable source. Even if it's to say that water is wet, or that the sun rises in the east. Thanks, Andjam 11:42, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If it is of biographical significance, then a reliable source would have noted it by now. Don't use wikipedia as a soapbox. Satisfactory. I can't say I like having the paragraph there stating one show above others, even if it is not mentioned by name, but for now it will do. Dac 00:03, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid you have, in fact, got my stance wrong. I encourage a lot of the things to be put it, as many as possible. But to single out one show above all others when we have a wide range of them seems overtly unfair to the others and comes across as advertising. Don't get me wrong, I thought Cumberland Gang Show this year was good (yes, I went to see it ;) ) but for an international event such as this, to single it out is injecting it above other shows. Ron Delezio

[edit]

Alright...you caught me. I too can make typos...which I'm sure you've never done, and I commend you for it. I have since gone back and added the 'e' that I had so carelessly sailed over. Note that I didn't forget it in my link to his daughter. Aside from that, I find it itneresting that you decided to post such a comment on my page, and editor who wants to merge the small amount of information presented to the more relevant article Sophie Delezio, instead of on the talk pages of those who wish to see it go. My opinion was formed by reviewing both articles, and noting that there was very little to say about Mr. DelEzio. The only real notable facts, in my opinion, are his award and his award nomination, and of coarse that he's the father of Sophie. Other than that, he's just not that notable. However, those two bits of information are notable, and can fit just fine into his daughter's article.Ganfon 18:43, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yea yea yea. Review my numerous contributions across the project including the extensive number of articles I have authored and/or rewritten and then presume to cast aspersions about my bad faith. Disagree with me - fair enough. But leave it at that. Eusebeus 02:25, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Eusebeus. Your article was nominated for deletion. The majority of people believe it should be merged/deleted. The people who contribute to AFD understand that Wikipedia runs by consensus, they review the article as it would appear in a normal encyclopedia and form their opinion. I understand you're proud of your article. I understand you're angry that it has been nominated for deletion. I too have had articles I felt, and still feel are notable enough to be in Wikipedia and have been deleted via the AfD process. However I did not go around complaining on the talk pages of those who disagreed with me. I did go and try to prove my point, as you did, and failed as you are. But I realized when it was time to move on, I didn't continue to patronize other people by preaching what my idea of notability was...Wikipedia had done that for me. I'm sorry about your article, I really am. But please stop lecturing the people who said it should be merged, we are merely trying to help this encyclopedia. Ganfon 04:38, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You know what I meant by 'your article', and if you didn't...I was referring to the fact that you had taken responsibility for and were fighting vigorously to keep it alive (which I do respect (to a point) by the way). Technically speaking, you never asked me a question to begin with, but I did answer the implied query in my original comment back. However, since I obviously confused you, I will try reiterate as plainly as possible. I saw the AfD, I reviewed the article. I looked back on what other editors thought. I then reviewed over Sophie's article. Finally I factored all of this together and came to the conclusion that it was not notable enough for it's own article, but the awards and such could be mentioned in the Sophie articlle, which is notable. I'm sorry this has turned into the argument it has, but my opinion won't change, and neither will your's, so let's leave it at that and stop patronizing each other. Ganfon 04:56, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hillsong article

[edit]

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, friend. I've corrected it. Tonicthebrown 10:35, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Albatross. Actually I am an ex-Adventist, but still have an interest in Adventism --hence my contribution to the Wikipedia articles. I wouldn't personally call the Adventists a cult, but I think some of their beliefs are definitely not mainstream Christian. I think I can be fairly NPOV because I want neither to glorify nor denigrate the church.

To clarify those terms for you: "Pentecostal" is a style of Christianity which focuses heavily on the Holy Spirit, miracles and worship. The Assemblies of God (AOG) are a denomination which are Pentecostal, and Hillsong is part of AOG. To be "non-denominational", a church cannot be part of a denomination (Anglican, Baptist, AOG, Adventist, etc.) Cheers. Tonicthebrown 03:29, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the Wp links you inserted to the articles on both the mythical and historical persons who happen to share the same names as the characters in the strip. My understanding is that the author of the strip does not intend that the characters should be perceived as referring to the mythical and historical persons. This might explain why the Ganesh character made only a single appearance since any representation is perhaps too unique. Albatross2147 03:24, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Paul Gibson

Yes played for Manly nothing really notable though if memory serves. Going to RL Encyclopedia says....

Souths (1962) 1 game
Manly (1966) 13 games / 3 tries & 7 goals for 23 points
Parramatta (1967 - 68) 23 games / 5 tries for 15 points
Penrith (1969 - 70) 9 games / 3 tries & 2 goals for 13 points

Manly junior was a winger, centre and five eighth with four clubs before pursuing a career in politics. The father of former Manly & Penrith player Greg Gibson, he was the Labor MP for Londonderry during the 1980s and 1990s before successfully contesting the seat of Blacktown in the 1999 State Election.

I'm sorry you are upset by the tag. The point is that your article does not assert what the individual's notability is. I specifically did not mark it for deletion, but the tag states "If you are familiar with the subject matter, please expand the article to establish its notability". I have no desire to have an edit war and will not further edit the article. I feel however it is likely that someone will mark it for deletion if it is not expanded. Cheers. Re:Australian Mother of the Year Award

[edit]

Generally, protection or semi-protection is only warranted for a round of really bad, uncontrollable vandalism - that doesn't appear to be the case yet. I'd say just try and warn the editors that they may be blocked from editing if they continue with it. If it gets worse, do let me know though. enochlau (talk) 04:20, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd do it if I was able to by policy. It's just that the protection policy is not meant to be invoked as a precaution against potential future vandalism (they seem to have stopped on that page... for the time being anyway). enochlau (talk) 10:13, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Calamondin

[edit]

Sorry, but I had to take out the image you placed in the Calamondin article. Calamondins have very small fruits, typically an inch in diameter and are used for cooking when green. Orange or ripe fruit are rarely used for cooking, or even ades. Were those calamondins in your image? They looked like oranges. -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 04:14, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you are some kind of arrogant image police? I know what sort of fruit it is. Put the image back. You shouldn't delete things done by experienced editors w/o some sort of discussion - it wan't like I was say the fruit is poison or a racist. I will take another shot with a ruler in front of it if you insist. Albatross2147 09:09, 28 July 2007 (UTC) Albatross2147[reply]

I try to avoid making personal remarks on other editors in edit summaries; I'd appreciate it if you'd return the courtesy. Be assured that playing devil's advocate on an article about somebody I actively dislike is annoying enough already without being called a 'prude' for doing so.

Hi, I am strongly support Gnan's warning that the talk pages are for the discussions on improvements of an article not for the general discussion on the topic matters. I think you will find that Horus has left WP. He has not edited since April. That is a great pity because his knowledge of UK Scouting is great and he has helped to keep an international flavour to our articles on Scouting. On you beef about the Boy Scout article I agree with you in part. I think part of the problem is that the Project wants it to be about the boy, while the related articles such as Cub Scout start with "A Cub Scout is a member of the section of the worldwide Scouting movement for young persons". Rover Scout is similar. I have argued before that the article should be focused on the section and not on the boy, because as you say many such sections contain girls. However, this is confused by the use of "Scout" for Girl Scouts and the general English word "scout" which predated the Scout Movement. The solution is not obvious and it needs careful thought. The BSA project members are acting in good faith and they are trying to keep our articles international. It does not help to call them bully boys or biased. --Bduke 09:32, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use disputed for Image:Tom barry gdii.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Tom barry gdii.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. Unspecified source for Image:Tom_barry_gdii.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Tom_barry_gdii.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 13:49, 14 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Videmus Omnia Talk 13:49, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FA of the day AfD

[edit]

Hello, I just removed the AfD from this article, Ernest Emerson. I just think it would be prudent to wait until tomorrow, when the article is no longer featured on the main page. I'm not going to be online a lot today, and I don't want to argue a lot about this, so if someone reverts me that's ok. I just think a little caution is warranted when the article is going to be seen by thousands of people today. Have a good day, Fang Aili talk 12:33, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article should never have been given FA status and you know it. The RFD does back regardless of IAR whatever that may be. Albatross2147 12:41, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not interested in arguing the merits of the article. My only issue right now is the fact that a main-page article is going to have a deletion notice on it. Frankly, this looks terrible. This article has had featured status since March and I see no reason why we must discuss its possible deletion right now. --Fang Aili talk 12:45, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So if it's OK if an article is substandard just so long as it has FA status? I don't think so. You obviously have some issues being an Admin if you operate in such a high handed way. Perhaps you should submit to a review yourself? However I am prepared to compromise. Will you personally restore what you have reversed? Albatross2147 12:52, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see you seem to be living adjacent to the subject in Wisconsin. Is this clouding your judement in this case? Albatross2147 12:54, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There's no reason to be argumentative. For the record, I'd never heard of Ernest Emerson before.
I will post a summary of events at the Emerson talk page. If someone else (not you or I) wants to restore the AfD, I have no problem with that. This will be my last post on the matter. --Fang Aili talk 12:56, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the subject lives in California. It makes me wonder if the article was actually written at all by the folks seeking to delete it. What exactly is the problem with the pictures? Some were from my collection, some uploaded by other collectors and a few were obtained with the permission of Emerson, himself? Is it because this is a weapons-related article that you have a problem with it? Mike Searson 15:22, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS, I read your note on my talkpage. If you want to work constructively with me on this, I have no objection. I know my writing style is not the best.Mike Searson 15:42, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Emerson Page

[edit]

Yes someone did notice about the image...it's been addressed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Iamunknown#Emerson_Page

So, back to the main issue at hand... if I want to edit a page, or rewrite the prose...rather than edit or change it or reword it, is it now wikipedia policy to post "Delete" on the article and hope it doesn't get removed? Is that what you're trying to tell me?--Mike Searson 04:58, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

feh. Point of view is not a reason for deletion. fix the article, put some sourced critism of Mr Emerson or his work in the article. and Please don't canvass. --Rocksanddirt 16:07, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dual-citizenship

[edit]

The US honors dual-citizenshipfor 2 countries only: Ireland and Israel. (I have friends of Greek and Iranian ancestry and those countries recognize it to six generations even if the US does not).

Both of my parents were born in Ireland and did have to renounce their Irish citizenship when they became US citizens (actually my dad's was Australian, long story). However children and grandchildren of Irish-born citizens can apply for and receive Irish citizenship...cost me about $500 with paperwork, etc. Technically my folks could reapply, but neither has any interest to do so. --Mike Searson 10:29, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I note your revert of Toonscabbie as vandalism. In fact the word is used locally in daily speech the same way as Toonga Bay is but perhaps in more scathing tones. I can't find a documented source so I haven't included it as a colloquial synonym. Albatross2147 23:09, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are a lot of colloquial names for suburbs but often many of them are disparaging or discriminating. I don't think we need to include information that creates tensions in the communities. Cheers. J Bar 23:54, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seven hills

[edit]

I am not sure what you mean by dropping the image of the station, could you please explain further. With the Gallery I thought there was enough text there for its own section and I don't see how this could cause any harm as no text or images were removed. I also thought that the un-sourced information in the gallery was a bit much for a caption, thats why I turned this into its own section. I have just been through the page history and noticed that the picture of the station used to be in the gallery. The picture of the station is now in the infobox so I guess thats why its no longer in the gallery, but I don't recall removing it. Cheers_Ad@m.J.W.C. 23:46, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmmmmmmmmm, Sounds like I am in trouble for something. I don't know, you seem upset my good fellow. I cant see what I have done wrong here. I am not quite sure that images can be used as references. I don't know where those pictures where taken and only someone who lives there or passes by would no the area, I also don't think the photos prove all the facts stated in the text. Hmmmmmmmmmm, I am not that concerned about you reverting my edits and I don't know why you are so upset. You mention a train station image, Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, I don't recall removing any train station images, I do not remove images unless I take a picture of my own that is of superior quality, which they normally are. And I can also reply on you talk page in a civil manner which I have. Also whoever wrote text in that article should be pleased that I gave it a more prominent position. Thats all I can think of at the moment. One more thing, if someone has removed an image all you have to do is go through the page history and retrieve it and restore it, its quite simple. Cheers_Ad@m.J.W.C. 07:09, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be attacking me over little or nothing, why don't you just revert the Seven hills article, I think this should give you some peace. Also the text that I contribute involves going through 10 to 15 different sources, to piece out information to add to the article. I really don't think that me adding things bit by bit really concerns you, I have a high work rate when it comes to adding text (lately), now I am going back to add small amounts of content to some of the articles that I created from scratch, for this involves going through, like I said before 10 to 15 different sources of information, the article in question is almost finished but still needs a bit of polishing up and thats what I am doing. About your train station image, the one that you are accusing me of deleting, well I don't know any thing about that, maybe it got deleted for being a copyright violation or it could be in the page history, or maybe it never existed in the first place. I also think you need to tone it down with your attacks, for some reason I think you may be harassing just for the sake of harassing someone. I think its about time you stopped pestering and move on to bigger things, like creating articles or something. Cheers_Ad@m.J.W.C. 13:01, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Knives and stuff

[edit]

As you say: "I have decided if you can't beat 'em you might as well join 'em" So I have set up a page for my local award winning sausage maker, Paul Conway (butcher) to demonstrate what happens if the biography areas are allowed to include anyone who has ever achieved anything notable. I think he is the first butcher ever to get a page of his own, I even had to set up new categories for him. What a pain! That said his fillet steak is commendable.... Hopefully if folk realise that anyone can set up a user page on wikipedia, then either we simply agree that anything goes, or at some point someone draws a line in the sand. But its a tricky one, isnt it? Excalibur 13:48, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are right in saying "Conway actually seems to be notable - at least from this article". I suppose it broadens the concept of what it notable to include a butcher - the first on Wikipedia, but not I think, the last! Well, considering how very minor some of the actors and athletes who merit an entry, it would be mere snobbishness not to let the butchers, bakers and candlestick makers get onto the site, as long as they win a few competitions and do their job well like Paul. As for his pies, black pudding or haggis going into space or getting into a novel, you have just given me an idea...I'm sure it could be arranged with a little ingenuity!

"Can we create an Ernie award?"

Yes, that sounds like a great idea. Some ridiculous caricature barnstar showing a bald eagle with a bowie knife between its teeth (er beak) flying through outer space with a couple of planets in the background? It would be awarded to the ten most vain and bloated entries about living people we can find following a competition amongst wikipedians to identify them. It could be sourced about and the coverage was not all trivial.

AfD nomination of Jabez Peters

An article that you have been involved in editing, Jabez Peters, has been listed for deletion. Hello. In view of the Afd of Mr Peters might I suggest you do an article on the wreck of the Dundonald and incorporate the Peters information in that? There's several good sources for it on the web, [3] and [4] and [5] for instance. This would enable the information on Peters to survive and more context to be given. It would also survive any attempt to delete it as such shipwrecks are held to be notable I would think. Just a thought. Nick mallory (talk) 10:01, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I started the article myself at Dundonald (ship) if you'd like to look at that. Nick mallory (talk) 10:44, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template on article "Theology"

It looks like you have removed template Copy section to Wikiquote from the section "Quotations" of article "Theology" ([6], [7], [8]). The edit summaries ("revert edit per by anon", "restore quotes critical of invisible-friend-ology", "restore quotes critical of invisible-friend-ology deleted by frenzied newbie who ought to read the 3RR") seem to address other aspects of these edits, so I am not sure if it was your intention to remove the template, or was its removal an accident... Would you mind to explain your position on this matter? --Martynas Patasius (talk) 23:27, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reply to FAC comments

[edit]

Re:this - setting aside the personal attacks you made against me, I want you to know that I never promote articles on the basis of the fact that I like them - it's a non-consideration. In fact, I generally err on the side of not promoting articles (regardless of whether or not I like them).

The FAC rules, as I am interpreting them on that nomination, are identical to other situations. Where inactionable objections are concerned, the test is "Can something be done to fix the objection?" (as written at the top of the page). Where notability is concerned, we use the oft-repeated rule that FAC is not AFD and we assume a-priori that anything nominated there is notworthy and potentially featurable. (And you are welcome to nominate it on AFD) As far as the pronoun gender issue - I'll defer to whatever they hash out on the manual of style, if and when they ever do manage to hash it out to a satisfactory conclusion. Until them, I'm going to err on the side of letting the article writer use his preference, so long as that preference finds common use in english. Raul654 (talk) 22:34, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No one is claiming that a visit by an angel is a fact. But to say "Smith said an angel visited him" does not accept that it is true. It is essentially synonymous with "Smith claimed an angel visited him". But in line with WP:AVOID, it's more NPOV to just report what Smith said and let the reader decide what to believe about it rather than use "claimed", which can subtly suggest what the person is saying is not true. AfD nomination of Basil Catterns

[edit]

An editor has nominated Basil Catterns, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Basil Catterns and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 16:00, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RCC edit

[edit]

Hi, I am not trying to be heavy-handed, but you changed a hotly-contested number that has two references, citing another WP article that in turn cites only one reference, without mentioning anything on the talk page. I reverted your edit, but would welcome the correction if the justification were: the two sources were misquoted, it is actually .2%. The.helping.people.tick (talk) 23:53, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On further reflection either number is quite small and perhaps the "stat" should be expressed in such a way so as to convey the fact the proportion of offenders was small but nonetheless their effect was significant on both the Church and the victims. Albatross2147 (talk) 02:31, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
The mention of the sex abuse scandals in the lead has been quite controversial, and it has been my position that putting them there at all constitutes WP:UNDUE weight, but that since most people read more newspapers than books, many editors will try to add ill-formed sentences of dubious accuracy saying something about them in the lead, and to prevent that, even though it violates WP:UNDUE, we should put a brilliantly prosaic, well-referenced, NPOV sentence there. You are welcome, of course, to contribute, but any change in the lead should probably be mentioned on the talk page. It might also help to know that the RCC article recently went through a very contentious FA review, which it failed, so there are a number of editors who know the article pretty well right now, and might be able to help address your concerns adequately. G;day

[edit]

G'day esteemed person who has expressed interest in Sydney based meetups at this page (I hope that's the correct wording for the formal greeting!!). You may have heard that Australia is to have its very own 'chapter' of the Wikimedia Foundation - and further, there's a meeting coming up to discuss / enact the chapter's incorporation (details here). I'm afraid that I don't know too much about the details of what this entails, other than having a private hope that we might get a secret handshake, and maybe cheap coffee at wikimania (this is a poor attempt at humour - I'm sure that the Chapter's do great work, and it's a good thing that Australia is to have one).

If you're interested in meeting up this weekend (the set date is the 20th) - or later, then please do head over here and sign up, or make a comment at the talk page... the drive to create the chapter has largely come from another town in Australia that I'm afraid I haven't actually heard much about.. and anything they can do.... right? - cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 11:11, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Kings lyn gs 1993 badge.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Kings lyn gs 1993 badge.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:04, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Albatross2147, thanks for adding the National Film & Sound Archive info to the articles for Aeroplane Jelly (and "A Pub With No Beer"), but next time can you please be a little more careful - you linked one reference to the Australian Dictionary of Biography entry for Bert Appleroth, instead of the ABC website, and the other didn't use a citation template when all the other citations in the Aeroplane Jelly article use templates. You also changed an existing "cite news" template to a "cite web" one, which broke the citation. :) Regards, Somno (talk) 14:07, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A good opportunity for...

[edit]

Mr.Albatross, VASCO from PORTUGAL here,

Just a quick comment: browsing through PAUL McGRATH's article, i found your reinstatement of a sentence (now properly referenced) with this "charmer" towards me (YES, ME, since I was the one removing it, i will proceed further on this message to explain why i did it): "re-inserting material removed by Ita supporter who probably knows more about diving than football"...CHARMING. Guess what, i am PORTUGUESE, not ITALIAN, and only removed it because it was UNREFERENCED (now it is, cool, good job, i only removed it because it seemed vandalism, i was wrong, i can be wrong sometimes, CAN I?), and if anyone should be doing something properly with this bit it's YOU, not ME (check your sources, that heroic by McGRATH, a player for which i have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration, is 100% true (OK again, good job again), but IRELAND was NEVER LEADING 1-0 because ITALY WON 1-0, with a SCHILLACI goal).

As i said, i left the bit you reinstated, only now i relocated it to INTERNATIONAL CAREER, properly arranged, without vandalizing anything as the ITALIAN MOBSTER YOU think i am. A good opportunity there was missed on your part to say...NOTHING!!

From PORTUGAL, a nice week,

VASCO AMARAL - --217.129.67.28 (talk) 04:19, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A good opportunity for...- PART 2

[edit]

Mr. Albatross, just a quick one to leave ya'

I do agree with one thing you state in your user page. You should not be civil towards people who are not civil to you, and you have EVERY RIGHT IN THE BOOK to not assume good faith, when giving the right reasons to do so.

In "our case", what led you to say i am "...Italian..." and know "...more about diving than football."??!?! I thought NOT.

Good day, from PORTUGAL,

VASCO AMARAL - --217.129.67.28 (talk) 04:25, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A good opportunity for.../Apologies (and sincere ones, might i add)

[edit]

Mr.ALBATROSS, VASCO here again (this time it is VERY IMPORTANT),

I owe you, at least in part, a SINCERE apology. That incident of McGRATH and BAGGIO referred to the WC 1994, not 1990 and there, most certainly, IRELAND won 1-0 (as opposed to the ITALIAN triumph, also 1-0, in the previous WC edition), so you had your sources right. I sincerely apologize to you in this aspect, and acknowledge i also missed a big chance to...ZIP IT!

I tell you that, upon discovering my gross mistake, IMMEDIATELY proceeded to correct all my wrongdoings, properly arranging storyline duly, although still leaving it in "INTERNATIONAL CAREER" (it was an international game, was it not?).

Why did i say "apology in part"? Because of your personal attack upon reinstating this bit (remember? "re-inserting material removed by Ita supporter who probably knows more about diving than football"). Not the manners, but you stick with your actions, the way i stick with mine, disposing of/apologizing for the ones i am not comfortable with, as this was the case now. I apologize again.

From Portugal,

VASCO AMARAL - --217.129.67.28 (talk) 05:01, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your further comment - this time without a snide personal remark, I note. You're absolutely right - I was in too much of a hurry. WP:WPSCH/AG is more relevant than WP:NOTE - and has a section on alumni inclusion criteria; Eiss is probably a marginal case, I guess. By the by, looking at the guidelines also reminds us that the section generally needs proper referencing (as does the article as a whole - it's been in a pretty dreadful state, and although I've tried to copy-edit, it's still ropey). Because you "know" may count as original research unless you can provide a verifiable source. You cannot let uncited info hang in articles for 10 months. of course if you find a citation you can add in at any time. Michellecrisp (talk) 23:57, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please be civil in your communications. I've seen removed for being not citated for 2 months. Anyone can challenge uncited info in Wikipedia under WP:CITE#CHALLENGED, even Jimbo Wales once said "In general, I find the [citation needed] tagging to be overdone in Wikipedia. A better option is to nuke the unsourced material. Sometimes fact tag is warranted, I don't mean that it is always a bad idea. But it is overdone." Michellecrisp (talk) 00:08, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As for citing a page number of a book, whilst not preferable it is not something that someone could easily look up. Michellecrisp (talk) 00:11, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Where access to specific resources, eg, school magazines, pre-digital texts, etc, is required to fulfil the encyclopedic function, we should never be surprised when decision-making via Google and/or robotic rules of conduct fail to 'cut the mustard'. With regards to the Commonwealth VC issue, no problem. I felt you were insinuating that I was making a comment on the nature of the awards, specifically by using the words "colonial" etc. I was over-tetchy on the subject I feel, and for that I apologise. It is down to how different people interpret the written word, something that is widely open to interpretation on the internet. Your opinions on whether to include a separate table on the OZ VC recipients list would be welcome. Regards, Woody (talk) 12:20, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This edit, I have no problem with, thought I must admit, I don't know what a "comprehensive" school is.
OTOH, I am not particularly amused by this edit comment: "happy now all you public education haters?".
Independent of who it is aimed at, it doesn't exactly "assume good faith".
Given that it was me who did this edit and made the comment: "ALL institutions in Oz "registered" as "schools" are, to varying degrees, "publicly funded". ALL of them. The variation is the percentage. Even "public" schools are not 100% "publicly funded".", I would guess that your edit comment is aimed at me.
If not, who was it aimed at?
If so, I am somewhat unimpressed that you have taken a statement of FACT, decided it was a statement of opinion, and categorised it as having been made by "a public education hater". Perhaps next time you might want to let the facts get in the way of whatever "good story" you wish to promote? Pdfpdf (talk) 11:47, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all, it's Meetup time again :-) - Hopefully you'll be up for meeting on April 22nd at about 6pm at The Paragon, a pub in Circular Quay. It'll be the usual round of drinks and chit chats, with no particular agenda, just some friendly faces, and a shared interest in Wiki stuff. If you've thought about coming along before, but haven't made it - we'd love to see you - it'll be a relaxed, social chin wag about all things wiki - bring anyone along you fancy, and I hope you can make it :-)

Please do sign up on the meetup page, and do also feel free to nominate an alternative time / date / location if for whatever reason the 21st doesn't work for you - we're an accommodating bunch :-) cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 04:10, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Christianity WikiProject Newsletter
Issue X - July 2009
Project news
  • The Christianity project and its related projects currently have 76 FAs, 8 FLs, and 148 GAs. We gained new recognized content in each field, with 4 FAs promoted, 2 FLs, and 3 GAs. Congratulations and a big thank you to all those who worked on these articles!
Member news
Other news
  • I am still working on the categorization matter. With any luck, we should have some results by the end of the month. There are also some discussions regarding project related activities at Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity/General Forum. One issue in particular that might be addressed is possible elections of new coordinators. Anyone interested in serving in such a capacity is more than welcome to indicate as much.
Related projects news
Member contest of the month
  • The previous contests are still ongoing, because of the extreme amount of time the categorization is taking me. Anyone who can bring any of the few Stub class articles among the project's 1000 most often accessed articles by the end of July will get an award. Please see the details Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Christianity#Project challenge of the month.
Christianity related news
From the Members

Welcome to the Tenth issue of the WikiProject Christianity newsletter! Use this newsletter as a mechanism to inform yourselves about progress at the project and please be inspired to take more active roles in what we do.

It has been a long time since the last coordinators election. There is a lot for people to do, and I certainly would welcome seeing any individuals with an interest in such a position put themselves forward as candidates. I in particular would very much like to see some degree of "specialization" in the coordinators, so that, for instance, we might have someone knowledgable about some of the specific Christian faith traditions or other main subjects, like Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, Mormonism, the Jehovah's Witnesses, art, theology, and so on. If any parties who have experience with some of our faith- or- subject-based content would be interested in being candidates, I would love to see them do so. Please feel free to take part in the discussion regading what the minimum number of category items is, and how to deal with the non-qualifying categories, on the General Forum page.

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Anthony-wesley-homebrew-telescope-IMG 2785-s.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

I believe

[edit]

... in the statements contained in the Nicene Creed. I believe that the Bible is one of the two defining bases for belief. The other is the Sacred tradition, which provides us with means of interpreting the Scriptures, as well as some teachings which have been handed on by God outside of the scriptures. I believe that the Magisterium has been empowered to fill this interpretative function. I believe that clerical celibacy is a rule that should generally be followed. I am a member of the Catholic Church.

Non-free rationale for File:Wcpad.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Wcpad.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Invitation

[edit]

There is a backstage pass coming up to be followed by an editathon in the State Library of New South Wales on 23 November. This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. For example, on the chosen topic (Australia and WWI), the Library holds many diaries and manuscripts from the period.

As you can see from the Library's project page, they have connected this editathon with their own work. They have already set out a wide range of resources to make things easier for us. Please sign up on the editathon project page if you can participate either online or in person with other Wikipedians. Hope to see you there! Thanks for uploading File:1918 German POW Christmas postcard.jpg. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Angelica Page requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
