Birth Date
[edit]I have Timo Glock as born on March 10th. Obviously the person who last updated the page didn't notice the birth date was in non-American fashion: day-month-year

Tell me what you think

- From what I've read, tyres. Apterygial (talk) 11:26, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

- It was purely tyres, as Jarno Trulli did the same laptime (1:44) as Glock on the last lap and he was still on slick tyres also. El Paulio (talk) 13:11, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- Not disputing the time, just the way he seemed to slow abruptly. And with that, does anybody object to deleting this whole section, so as to not encourage OT discussion? TREKphiler hit me ♠ 08:22, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Renamed it. It's not really OT, it concerns Glock and contains no opinions, just facts ;). Probably in the future you should name sections with more talk page friendly names (unless this is a clever example of IAR). Apterygial (talk) 09:02, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

And I just read your comment. Glock on the last lap lost 4.8 seconds in the first sector on Hamilton, 9.5 in the second, and 5.3 in the third. He didn't slow suddenly, it was across the whole lap, particuarly in the middle sector. I.E., mechanical, not driver related. Apterygial (talk) 09:08, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- No, not IAR (but thanks for thinking it was ;D), more being too cute for my own good. And I was thinking of Hamilton's pass in particular, where on the TV, Timo seemed to be very slow; loss of grip due to slicks, I guess, now, but at the time, it looked like a breakage. TREKphiler hit me ♠ 09:31, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Taking at look at the lap times Timo drove laps 3-5 seconds faster than Trulli and surprisingly suddenly drops his lap times to the same point? At the point he let Hamilton past him, he was far away from a decent driving line, I'd say he didn't either care or wanted Hamilton to win. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.245.231.167 (talk) 00:23, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
- You'd be surprised what a car with old, worn-down dry tyres will do on a track as wet as that. Conspiracy theorists such as you will always be suspicious of stuff like this, but trust me when I say there is nothing here beyond tyres in the wet. - Thee shall talk English poor, Yoda approve not? Basically you're claiming that Glock was the worst driver in the world in the last lap. Have a nice day. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.245.231.167 (talk) 00:35, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
- There's nothing wrong with his English, but there's a lot wrong with your reasoning. If you don't understand what happened, then don't edit the article. Bretonbanquet (talk) 00:50, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
- I gave you enough information to figure it out yourself, but it seems your brain wasn't capable enough to do it. If you scale the lap times, you can notice that Glock's time compared to his team mate's time had gone 5 seconds worse even when you would exclude the rain. Your reasoning is "I'm right, you're wrong, I don't have the proof but I like cake and the cake is a lie blabla" so how about you read some more articles and then come back mmkey? thank you, have a nice one. ta ta! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.245.231.167 (talk) 00:54, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

It seems that you're in no position to criticise anyone's English - yours is atrocious. If I "scale the lap times"? What's that supposed to mean exactly? I'm not even going to ask where cake comes in. If you can come up with a half-coherent argument, or indeed the proof you're so keen on bleating about, please post it - you can see we all need educating by an expert analytical brain such as yours. Bretonbanquet (talk) 01:06, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
- Incidentally, our point of view is not biased, your accusation is a very serious one. If Glock comes out and says "yes, I did it on purpose" then we will change it. Otherwise, the page remains as is. Apterygial talkstalkinsane idea 01:18, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
- Personally I'd like to see some video of his pass to see if Lewis was let thru. The angle on ITV made it look like Timo'd broken; I wonder if a shot from Lewis or Vettel might not show Lewis just got much better traction on inters. TREKphiler hit me ♠ 09:32, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
- There's a video available on Formula1.com that offers slightly better view. LeaveSleaves talk 09:41, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
- A few random thoughts: Trulli and Glock did almost exactly the same lap time on the last lap; Glock may have been lapping faster than Trulli before the last lap, but surely the point is that the conditions changed (becoming wetter) on the last lap, so comparing previous lap times isn't particularly relevant. According to Martin Brundle's commentary, the dry tyres drop out of their temperature zone quite quickly in the wet because they're not being worked hard enough. The tyre pressures drop as a consequence of the temperature change, the available grip falls drastically and can't be recovered because the car can't be driven fast enough to get heat back into the tyres. The lower pressure also drops the ride height - and a large proportion of an F1 car's suspension movement comes from the tyres, not the suspension itself. Regarding Glock's sudden slowing, he certainly lost most of the time in the middle, not the last, sector. He was off line and did slow dramatically in the last corner, but isn't that exactly what you would expect from someone who'd slid wide on completely unsuitable tyres? Remember that at speed an F1 car slows at about 1g if you just lift off the throttle, due to aerodynamic drag. Also remember the drastic changes of position on the last lap of the Belgian GP, where some drivers were on drys and others on intermediates.
- Anyway, as noted above, without cited comment from someone who knows what they're talking about implying that Glock was somehow to blame, nothing should go in the article.4u1e (talk) 10:41, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

- 4u1e, you're reasoning's solid, & I have no argument. I'd like to settle the issue in my mind, is all. I'm willing to believe it was loss of traction, but I'd like a better view. (Sorry to say, the F1 site has about the most useless highlight reel I've ever seen...) TREKphiler hit me ♠ 22:49, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
Dry weather tyres and slicks
[edit]There is a difference between dry weather tyres and slicks, yes. For the last few seasons there have strictly been no slicks as all tyres have been grooved. But, and here's the nub, during the period when tyres have been all grooved, the grooved tyres that are used in the dry have been referred to as slicks quite widely. This is done to avoid the confusing labels that would otherwise be needed. So you have two kinds of wet tyres, full and intermediate, and slicks which are grooved but do the job slicks used to do. And will again from next year. Anyone not clear see me afterward (LOL) Britmax (talk) 11:15, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
- But as this is an encyclopedia, we cannot refer to be tyres which are not slicks as 'slicks'. What they are called colloquially is irrelevent, and in DH's edit you reverted the clarification isn't even needed. Finally, it will just serve to confuse the issue when slicks are reintroduced. I'm going to revert your edit pending DH's response. Apterygial talkstalkinsane idea 11:37, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
- In addition to the reasons expressed above by Apterygial, I also felt that the phrase "(so-called "slicks")" just wasn't necessary - the statement that "Glock was sixth with a few laps to go and opted to remain on the track with dry-weather tyres while the most of the other drivers opted for wet tyres due to rain falling during the final laps of the race." says everything that needs to be said. But I'm not especially passionate about it - if you want to put it back in, I won't remove it again. DH85868993 (talk) 13:40, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
Fair enough, it's not needed. Britmax (talk) 15:16, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

The Same one is also for Felipe Massa, as he is not driving while he is still not as his Current Team is Ferrari. And, please change the latest GP to 2009 Japanese GP. ‡- No Picture added to save space. Please Reply, KembanganGreen (talk)
- AFAIK, neither Timo nor Felipe has been released, so they're still "current", even if not currently active. I can't say I know of WP policy on it, but until they're cut, I'd leave it be. TREKphiler hit me ♠ 10:06, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
- I'd also say leave them as is. Also, please clarify your request to "change the latest GP to 2009 Japanese GP" - do you mean change it 2009 Japanese GP instead of 2009 Japanese Grand Prix? If so, why? DH85868993 (talk) 11:12, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
- Change from the template so it doesn't update for Brazil, I should think. I've done that, anyway. --Ian Dalziel (talk) 11:51, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
- Of course. Silly me. DH85868993 (talk) 11:55, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
