Zinedine Zidane Community Service
[edit]MTN Football reports that Robben Island is Zinedine's choice to perform his community service, in lieu of his 3-game suspension for headbutting Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final game, as he is now retired. Link to MTN Football article of September 12, 2006.
I am trying to expand this article, mainly focusing on the differences between this book and other accounts (books and otherwise) of South Africa throughout this period. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated on the talk page.BillMasen 13:30, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
Seal Island name
[edit]First of all, I do not live in Cape Town or even in South Africa, so my local geography might be way off. That being said, I noticed:
1. There are quite some islands in South Africa that carry a name referring to seals or "robben".
2. The Horsburgh-reference does not seem to refer to Robben Island but to an island at the other side of Cape Town "westward of Bald Head" (p96) and an island far further, in Mossel Bay. (p223)
My questions are:
1. Is it accurate to call Robben Island Seal Island?
2. Are there references backing this up?
--Bacchuss (talk) 16:30, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- I have removed the ref where is was used to state that the Island is also called Seal Island since Horsburgh on p.71 actually does not state this; it states "Robben or Penguin Island". Not sure about your reference to p96 as that page deals with the South Coast of Australia. p223 does indeed refer to Seal Island in Mossel Bay. As for your questions: I don't believe it is accurate to call Robben Island Seal Island and have not seen any references for doing so. --NJR_ZA (talk) 19:07, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for clearing this up. --Bacchuss (talk) 07:15, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
I live in Cape Town, and I can say that Seal Island is on the other side of the peninsula, and not related to Robben Island. --Edward — Preceding unsigned comment added by 196.210.179.203 (talk) 08:07, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
History
[edit]There seems to be little about the prison on the island, other than a list of inmates. What's happened to it? Is it still a prison? Could someone who knows please add something? 81.154.59.86 (talk) 20:48, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
The High security prison for political prisoners was closed in 1991 and the medium security prison for criminal prisoners was closed in 1996. http://www.robben-island.org.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=33&Itemid=62 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.132.198.10 (talk) 16:33, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Freedom Fighter and Stuggle Hero
[edit]I have replaced the phrases Freedom Fighter and Stuggle Hero in refrence to prisoners to activists as it is POV and contraviens Wiki policy on avoiding calling people Freedom Fighters, Terrorists ect as it is point of view, so I feel Activist is a more neutral term that should be more widley accepted --Scottykira (talk) 20:52, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Mister Mandela's number of prisoner
[edit]Hello !
Mister Mandela's number of prisoner is known all over the world : 466/64 or 46664
But is there an official list of the names of the other prisoners at the same time, with their numbers before and later : for example 465/64 or 467/64 aso.
Thanks in advance for the precision of your answer.
Best regards.
